3’s/4’s
Program
This week in the three/four year old classroom we talked
about construction. On Monday we celebrated Valentine's Day with a Valentine
exchange and heart healthy snacks at our party. Students used foam
pieces to build a heart as a gift for family members.
On Tuesday students were able to create their own building
in the block center, they were able to use the outlined shapes on the floor
for "blueprints". Students used popsicle sticks to
create their own stick houses. On Wednesday we had Mrs. Burnworth visit
and tell us all about architecture. She taught us that architects draw
and design the buildings that construction workers use to build the new
buildings. She brought in lots of pictures of different types of
buildings and structures, we had a great time learning about her very
important job. Check out your child's brightwheel profile for
pictures. Then after Mrs. Burnworth left, we used toothpicks and
marshmallows to build our own 3D structures.
On Thursday, students built their own bulldozer, and we
learned that bulldozers are used to move the dirt and rocks away from the
area that the building will be built. We also got to watch a few
minutes of Bob the Builder where we learned about some more of the machines
that are used to create buildings. On Friday, we used tools to "excavate"
dinosaurs out of frozen water balloons. Students had a great time
learning how to use the hammer and claw to break away the ice.
Keep in mind, there will be NO
SCHOOL on Monday in observance of President's
Day.

PARENT RESOURCES
WHAT CHILDREN LEARN FROM BLOCK PLAY:
1.
Problem solving. Sometimes it is intentional: “I want
to build X. How do I do that?” Other times it is in-the-moment: “To go
higher and add to one side, what can I use?”—Peter Pizzolongo
2. Imagination. Children can follow
their own plan, or they can share a friend’s vision and work together to
create something they never dreamed of.—Karen Cairone
3. Self-expression. Blocks offer many
ways for young dual language learners to explore, express themselves, and
demonstrate what they are learning across languages.—Karen Nemeth
4. Mathematics. Important concepts
and skills are practiced and strengthened through block play, including
length, measurement, comparison, number, estimation, symmetry, balance.—Kristen
Kemple
5. Continuity and
permanence.
Block play engages spatial sense and motor abilities; it can be a solo or a
group effort; block creations can stand for an indefinite period of time.—Lawrence
Balter
6. Creativity. Blocks and other
loose parts can be moved freely by children, to be combined and recombined in
countless ways.—Angela Eckhoff
7. Science. Blocks offer
opportunities to test hypotheses and build scientific reasoning.—Gayle Mindes
Self-esteem. Children discover that they have ideas and that they can bring their ideas to life by creating, transforming, demolishing, and re-creating something unique.—Holly Bohart
8. Social and emotional
growth.
Blocks help children learn to take turns and share materials, develop new
friendships, become self-reliant, increase attention span, cooperate with
others, and develop self-esteem.—Kathleen Harris

FAITH-LIFE RESOURCES
Psalm
127: 1-3
1 Unless the Lord
builds the house,
the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. 2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.
3 Children are a
heritage from the Lord,
offspring a reward from him. |
