Lutheran Schools Week

From the Teachers:
January 23-27, 2017
3’s/4’s Program
This week we learned all about the armor of God.  Students were able to hear various Bible stories that taught them ways that God protects, guides and helps us.

On Monday students created their own shield of Faith and learned that God will always keep His promises and He will protect us.  We also had special visitor's Rachel Hooker and Susan O'Brien from Thrivent Financial in our classroom Monday making Valentine cards for some of our friends in the retirement homes around Lexington.  Students also created a card to bring home to family members. This helped us kick off our Lutheran Schools week, and remind us that God wants us to give to others!

On Tuesday, students made their own belt of truth.  We learned that God wants us to always tell the truth, even when it is hard.
We also celebrated Jayden's birthday on Tuesday with all of our friends.

On Wednesday, students created their own helmet of salvation, and they learned that by believing that Jesus died for their sins, they are saved.

On Thursday, students made a sword of the spirit. We learned that God's word is our protection, and that we can use God's words to help ourselves and others see the mistakes that we make.

On Friday, students made a breastplate of Righteousness, we learned that Righteousness is being good and fair to others.  We can use our breastplate of righteousness to stand up for others.  On Friday, we celebrated the 100th day of school!  Students brought in 100 snack items and we mixed them together to make a trail mix snack!  Students helped us count to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's while we were creating our snack mix!  Thank you for helping us out by sending in items to share!!

Next week we will have our multi-cultural week!  Notes have been sent home, and the sign-up sheets are out, please sign up to come to our class and introduce our students to a new culture.  We are looking forward to learning some new things!!

What does a Lutheran Believe?
See the whole What Is a Lutheran Pamphlet at:

Lutherans stress: (from the What is a Lutheran pamphlet)
•Justification by faith (that we are forgiven for our sins and given a relationship with God only by the faith God gives).
•That a person is not to live according to a formula of do’s and don’ts, but in the freedom of Christian love.
•The two basic teachings of the Bible are the Gospel (that which shows us our Savior and what He has done for us) and the Law (that which shows our sin and our need for repentance).
•Belief in all that Jesus Christ has done for us.
•Faith in Jesus Christ: a relationship with God our Father, which is strengthened by the Holy Spirit.
•Repentance: acknowledging sinfulness and need for a Savior.
•Seeking/knowing the Lord through the teachings of the Bible and living a life of love through Jesus Christ.
God our Savior wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. -- 1 Timothy 2:3-6

BAPTISM: If your child has not already received the gift of baptism, please consider it! Talk to Pastor Johnson at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church anytime.
In and through Baptism, God cleanses us from all of our sins, snatches us from the power of Satan, and gives us everlasting life. It is all God’s doing as He gives us His blessing. It is His promise. In Baptism, our Triune God imparts to each of us personally the gifts the Lord Jesus Christ won for the world through His life, suffering, death, and resurrection. Please see especially Galatians 3:27; Col.1:13–14; 1 Peter 3:21; Titus 3:5–7 and 1 Cor.6:11. From LCMS What About Series — Dr.A.L.Barry

FRIENDSHIP

From the Teachers:
January 16-20, 2017
3’s/4’s Program
On Tuesday we made handprints and mixed our colors with a friend. Thursday we made paper chain friends and named who our friends are, we also made paper chain hearts and told ways that we could be good friends.  These are posted on our bulletin board in the classroom.  We counted how many days we have been in school and we added a star with a new number for each day.

We named words that begin with “Q” for our letter of the week and learned the sign for Qq.  Q words are hard to find but we managed to think of 14 words starting with Q.

Wednesday we did letter recognition with the threes. We did a tracing worksheet and colored the Q's.

The fours learned their third sight word, “the!” They learned "a" and "and" last week. As you read with  them see if they notice those words. On Friday, we all played bingo together. We all were able to fill our Bingo board so we all got stickers.

In our Bible stories we read:
A rich man's question and Jesus enters Jerusalem from our Family Time Bible Story.

Next week we have Lutheran Schools week.  We will be learning about the armor of God and we will make our own armor.  We have some special guests from Thrivent Financial coming on Monday morning. They will be here first thing in the morning to make a craft with your child and share about stewardship and generosity.

2’s Program
This week in the twos room we talked about friendship! We made peace signs by spraying them with water paint, we did a group painting project to make the tree on our bulletin board, each student made a coffee filter heart, friendship bracelets, and dream catchers!

Our kids have also gotten really good at naming the shapes on our calendar board such as pentagon, octagon, trapezoid, and hexagon!  See our video on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LutheranSchoolofLexington/videos/1383081585043612/

Our Bible story for the week was from the Pray and Play Bible – “The Little Lost Sheep.”

Polar Animals

From the Teachers:
January 2-6, 2017
3’s/4’s Program
This week we learned about polar animals.  We talked about polar bears, penguins, Arctic wolves, killer whales, beluga whales, and seals. We talked about where all these animals lived (at the north and south poles) and we found these locations on a globe. We discovered what keeps them warm in the cold temperatures.

In our sensory table we had artificial snow which was made with shaving cream and baking soda. We had small polar animals to play with.  In our reading center we had lots of new books about polar animals.  We made polar bear paint spray shadow pictures, we made polar animal rice pictures where we counted how many scoops of rice we needed to cover our animals and the students made choices of a penguin, a polar bear or a seal. We moved like polar bears through snow and danced like penguins on ice.

We will wrap up this unit with an experiment to show how blubber protects the polar animal from cold water.  (Since there was no school on Friday we will do our experiment on Monday.)

In our Bible stories this week we learned how Jesus is always with us.  We read about some of the miracles he performed during his time on earth, and learned that he loved children.

We were very pleased to welcome all of our friends back from the holiday break!  Happy New Year everyone!

2’s Program
This week we started back trying to get into the routine of things. We welcomed our new friend Ayush to our room! We hope he loves our classroom as much as us!
This week we talked about polar animals and where they live. We made paper igloos, and colored the northern lights with chalk. We learned about some of the animals that live in the arctic and even discovered how penguins walk! We also played with our new Little People center and the kids loved it!  Our Bible lesson was The Story of Esther.

Snow Painting
Snow painting is a great winter activity for kids. It is a unique way to nurture artistic talent or introduce kids to the joy of artistic creation.
Here's How:
1.      Gather Necessary Items
At the very least you need yellow, red, and blue food coloring and three spray bottles (get in the baking aisle).
2.      Prepare the Spray Bottles
Fill the spray bottles with cold water. (Hot and even warm water could melt the snow too much.) Add a few drops of food coloring to the bottles so that you have one bottle of red, one of blue, and one of yellow water. Be sure that the bottles have enough coloring in them to make the colors visible once they are sprayed on the snow.
3.      Send the Kids Out to Paint!
All the kids need are their spray bottles -- and their imaginations and creativity. You can show them how the spray bottles work and have them test the way the colors mix to create other colors.
4.      Take Pictures!

Snow/Ice Activity
An activity to do at home would be to take ice crushed in the blender or snow from outside, put it in a Ziploc bag, add an Alka-Seltzer tablet and seal it. If you decorate the bag like a snowman face, something exciting happens!

This may take up to an hour but the bag should be in a tub or shallow baking dish to avoid messes.

Tell your teachers how it came out!

Creation Day 6 - Animals - Genesis 1:24-25
"24 And God said, 'Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.; And it was so.
25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Play Animal Charades
Have a child whisper in your ear which animal he/she wants to pretend to be.
They act it out and the other family members try to guess.
